St. Valentine’s Day Market

This week:

We were very sad to cancel our Friday night Valentine’s Event, but are bouncing with excitement because the Farmers’ Market on Sunday will be even better – we’re moving some of Friday’s event over to Sunday! … We have all the usual wonderful organic produce (see below for more details!), and also some wonderful Valentine’s Day tips:

  • At 10:30am, Charlie will be demonstrating some good-for-you-chocolate Valentine’s Day treats that are super easy to make at home for your family or loved ones
  • At 12:30pm, motivational speaker Kevin Gianni from The Renegade Health Show will be talking about Food Cravings and teach us how we can overcome them.

Your Shopping Lists:

New potatoes are in season – yippee! And we’re delighted to see so many heirloom varieties making their way to market – the beautiful colors of Carrots and Tomatoes have been a joy, and quite a talking point these past few weeks! This week the heirloom carrots are back, as is rainbow chard. We’re also very pleased to see the arrival of Spinach in amongst our more regular greens.

  • Greens: Green and Heirloom Rainbow Chard, Savoy Cabbage, Lettuce, Spinach, Arugula, Asian Mix
  • Veggies:  Grape Tomatoes, Green Peppers, Heirloom Carrots, Cauliflowers, White and Portabella Mushrooms, Radishes, New Potatoes, Yukon Gold Potatoes
  • Herbs: Dill, Garlic Chives, Flat Italian Parsley
  • Extras: Eggs … and lots of Valentine’s treats for you to buy and take home

“Fall in Love with Real Food”

Let’s face it, it’s gotten cold again! And thunderstorms are forecast for Friday night. So we’ve taken the sad decision to cancel our Valentine’s Event.

BUT DO NOT WORRY … we’re moving it all to Sunday -Valentine’s Day! …

Check out the Farmers’ Market post for details!

We have had such a great response from our Raw Detox programs, almost 80 people that have either completed it or signed up for it, that we decided to throw a party! And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner it makes it a double celebration!

So come and join us on Friday 12th February between 6pm and 8pm at Help Yourself and “Fall in Love with Real Food”! (We even made a Valentines video for you!)

We will have our tents set up outside the restaurant where:

  • Charlie will be demonstrating some healthy valentines treats that are super easy to make at home for your family or loved ones.
  • Motivational speaker Kevin Gianni from The Renegade Health Show will be speaking about Food Cravings and teach us how we can overcome them.
  • We will have a raw tapas bar so you can sample some of our tasty raw dishes!

And of course it will be a great way meet and catch up with other people that are passionate about healthy living and real food!

Farmers’ Market – back home to the corner of Fleming & Margaret!

Last Sunday we had a great time, taking the Farmers’ Market over to join the Key West Food & Wine Festival. Thank you to all our regular Market-goers for making the trip down the road! And great to meet so many new faces.

This week we’re back on home turf, at the regular time

9am to1pm

If you thought SuperBowl couldn’t also be a healthy and delicious day… think again!

At the market this week, we’ve got juicy heirloom carrots, as well as gorgeous heirloom tomatoes – they sold out so quickly last week!

The Lacinato Kale, Red Kale and Red Chard are back on the list this week, along with regular favorites: Asian Mix, Arugula, Assorted Lettuce (Crisphead, Butterhead, Romaine, Looseleaf), Cauliflower, White Mushrooms, Portabellas and Potatoes.

… Not forgetting our local Keys eggs – we KNOW how much you love those!! No fighting now!!!

… Or the grape and roma tomatoes, red round radishes, scallions, parsley and cilantro.

Food Rules – An Eaters Manual

We love Micheal Pollan! His philosophy around food, outlined in his books ‘The Omnivores Dilema’ and ‘In Defense of Food’, are directly in line with ours and the reasons we opened Help Yourself. In fact I can’t think of any better words to sum it up than his phrase on the front of ‘In Defense of Food’; Eat Food. Not Much. Mostly Plants.

This morning I had some time to myself and I went down to Voltaire Books and picked up his latest book ‘Food Rules’. This is a simple pocket guide he calls ‘An Eaters Manual’ that contains 64 rules on how to eat.

Forget Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, Medi Fast or any of the other fad diets out there, if everyone followed these simple guidelines we would have a much healthier and thinner nation. Guaranteed.

Take Rule number 37 for instance:

“The whiter the bread the sooner you’ll be dead”

How true this is! In fact here’s a little whole grain trivia we have posted at the restaurant that helps you understand why this rule is so true:

What is a whole grain? A grain with all its edible parts in tact – Bran, germ, endosperm.

Huh..? When a grain is refined, like white rice and white pasta, the germ and bran are removed so it is no longer a ‘whole food’. Most of the fiber and nutrients like vitamin E, the B vitamins and the phytonutrients are found in the germ and the bran.

So? Well, grains are carbohydrates and when refined, the sugar is released directly into the blood stream raising your blood sugar levels. Because of the excess sugar the body ends up turning it into fat. Whole grains release the sugars slowly providing sustained energy without spiking the blood sugar levels or turning it into fat.

Moral of the story – Eat whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread and quinoa and you’ll have more energy and won’t get fat!

    How to survive Fantasy Fest and the inevitable hangover!

    Calling all Villains, Vixens and Vampires, Fantasy Fest 2009 celebrates 30 years of debauchery which means it’s a non-stop party here in Key West from October 23rd to November 1st ! And where there’s a party there’s usually late nights and alcohol which means there may be a hangover or two!

    But do not fear Help Yourself can help you survive the week with our hangover tips and our special Fantasy Fest specials that can be delivered right to your room, the poolside or even the beach!

    But first here are three simple tips to help avoid or ease a hangover:

    1. Stay Hydratedeveryone knows this but when chugging the beers back its easy to forget! So drink plenty of water before, during and after drinking. We have a secret ingredient here in Key West that helps the body re-hydrate even quicker – it’s Coconut Water! Did you know that Coconut water is a natural hangover elixir? Drinking alcohol has a diuretic effect, which in addition to dehydrating the body, depletes the body of salts, electrolytes, magnesium and potassium which coconut water is naturally packed full of. Our coconut water comes from coconuts picked fresh each day and then bottled for your convenience. Starting the day by drinking a 16oz bottle of coconut water will definitely help ease the hangover blues!     2. Load up on Vitamin C and the B Vitamins. Alcohol puts stress on your body and depletes the B Vitamins so it is essential to load up on this Vitamin group after a heavy night of drinking. The best way to nourish your body with B Vitamins is through eating whole grains. We only use whole grains at Help Yourself so start the day with our whole grain granola or our power bowl made with whole oat groats. For lunch try one of our nourishing bowls with brown rice. Vitamin C will enhance your immune system helping your body fight the toxic effects of alcohol and our Citrus C smoothie is just full of Vitamin C. Juices are also a great way to get a quick and easy boost of vitamins so try our Daily Detox, our Going Green or the Eatta Carrot at any time of the day for a boost of energy and nutrition.

    3. Slow down the absorption of alcohol with nuts and seeds. If you want to last the night then eating foods that are high in protein and good fats will help slow down the absorption of alcohol and nuts are the perfect food for this. Our crispy tacos or our lasagne are a great pre drinking dinner because the filling is made entirely from pumpkin seeds and brazil nuts. Pumpkin seeds are also very high in minerals that are lost through drinking. The Fruit and Nut bar is a great snack to carry in your purse when heading out for a night on the town. It’s large enough to take small bites throughout the night to help keep energy levels up and slow down the absorption of alcohol! Our Fantasy Fest Smoothie special “The Vixen” is a delicious and very nutritious pre or post drinking smoothie, we highly recommend it!
